FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s expectations of having one of football’s biggest attractions at the competition were dashed when Cristiano Ronaldo declared he was nearly positive he would not be competing in the Club World Cup.
The Portugal player said on Saturday that he had received “quite a few” offers to play for competing clubs during the tournament beginning on June 14 but had chosen not to accept any of them.
“You can’t participate in everything,” Ronaldo remarked, adding that some topics make sense to discuss while others don’t.
A day prior to Portugal’s match versus Spain in the UEFA Nations League final, Ronaldo was in Munich giving a speech.
In a 2-1 semifinal triumph over Germany on Wednesday, the 40-year-old scored his 137th goal for his country to secure Portugal’s place in the championship game.
When questioned initially about the FIFA Club World Cup, Ronaldo responded, “This is irrelevant right now.” “Talking about anything other than the national team is pointless.”
