Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Hamas ‘closer than ever’, says Qatar

Qatar stated on Tuesday that ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas are at their closest point to yet, boosting optimism that bombing in the Gaza Strip may stop.

“This is the closest point we have been to a deal over the past months,” Majed Al Ansari, a spokesman for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, said at a press conference in Doha.

He claimed that the US, Egypt, and Qatar were able to reduce the number of disputes between Israel and Hamas. “The current negotiations are focused on the last details of coming to a consensus,” he stated.

He said that both Israel and Hamas had received drafts of a potential ceasefire deal from Qatar. Mr. Al Ansari did, however, warn against having unrealistic hopes until a formal ceasefire proclamation is made.

“We do think we are at a matured point, and we think we are at a final stage, but there won’t be an announcement until it is made, of course. As a result, we shouldn’t get too thrilled about the current situation. But we do have hope.

Hamas, meanwhile, declared that the ceasefire discussions in Gaza had entered their last phase and expressed hope that a comprehensive and transparent agreement will be reached at the end of this round of talks.
