UN chief Antonio Guterres told reporters, “It is killing people,” in reference to the contentious aid system in Gaza that is supported by the US and Israel. The new initiative avoids the UN, which claims hundreds of relief seekers have been slain.
The new assistance delivery system in Gaza, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, is “inherently unsafe” and “killing people.”
Under the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s (GHF) new approach, thousands of Palestinians wait in line almost daily to receive food.
In mid-May, GHF began operations with support from the US and Israel. However, the UN criticized it, claiming that it was a tactic used by Israeli soldiers to turn food into a weapon.
The UN reports that more than 400 Palestinians had been slain while attempting to access aid from GHF facilities.
Since Israeli troops have advocated for the alternative system, which they claim prevents Hamas from taking aid, GHF avoids the UN and other NGOs.
Israel has pledged to maintain control of Gaza and battle until Hamas is destroyed and the group returns the 50 hostages it took during the October 7, 2023 bombings that started the conflict—not all of whom are believed to be alive.
Food search should never be a cause of death: Guterres
Guterres told reporters that relief workers are famished and that the UN-led humanitarian efforts in Gaza are being “strangled.” Additionally, he stated that Israel must make it easier for aid to enter and pass through Palestinian territories.
“People are dying only to provide for their families and themselves. He told reporters, “The hunt for food must never be a death sentence.” “The political will to implement a ceasefire in Gaza is long overdue.
The Israeli military frequently claimed that warning shots had been fired over people’s heads to get them to move when questioned about past events.
The left-leaning Israeli Israel’s Military Advocate General authorized an inquiry into potential war crimes on Friday, according to the Haaretz daily, following claims that Israeli forces intentionally fired at Palestinian people close to aid distribution locations.
No fatalities near assistance distribution sites, according to GHF
According to a GHF representative, no one has died at or close to any of the GHF relief delivery locations, as reported by the Reuters news agency.
The GHF spokesperson stated, “It is regrettable that the UN keeps spreading misleading information about our operations.”
“In conclusion, our assistance is being supplied safely. We would invite the UN and other humanitarian organizations to join us in feeding the people of Gaza rather than arguing and insulting them from the sidelines.”
