Introduction:
Azerbaijan gained control of Lachin City according to the Armenia Peace deal. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has announced that his country’s troops had moved into the strategic city of Lachin to replace Russian peacekeepers stationed there in line with a peace deal signed with Armenia in 2020.
“We, the Azerbaijanis, have returned to Lachin. Azerbaijan Army is now stationed in the city of Lachin. The villages of Zabukh and Sus were taken under Azerbaijani control,” he wrote on Twitter on Friday.
Azerbaijan gained Lachin:
Footage released by the defense ministry showed what it said were Azerbaijan army vehicles moving into the city and the national flag waving over the main building. Lachin lies in a narrow strip of land in a mountainous region that is the only transit option between Armenia and Stepanakert, the capital of the breakaway territory of Karabakh.
The 2nd Karabakh War between Azerbaijan and Armenia:
Nagorno-Karabakh, which lies within Azerbaijan, had been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a separatist war there ended in 1994. That conflict left not only Nagorno-Karabakh but large chunks of surrounding lands in Armenian hands. But in renewed fighting that began on September 27, 2020, Azerbaijan troops routed the Armenian forces and wedged deep into Karabakh.
Their advance forced Armenia to accept a Russia-brokered peace deal on November 10, 2020, that saw the return to Azerbaijan of a significant part of the separatist region. It also obliged Armenia to hand over all of the areas it held outside Karabakh. Moreover, Azerbaijan says it quelled the Armenian Attack near the Karabakh region.

Azerbaijan says its forces have suppressed an Armenian attack near the disputed enclave of Karabakh, prompting international calls for an end to fighting in a region that has been a flashpoint for 30 years. In 2020, Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a war over the region and Baku successfully won back part of the territory controlled by the separatists.
Deployment of Russian Peacekeepers:
Under the terms of a subsequent ceasefire, Russian peacekeepers were deployed to protect the remainder of the separatist-held territory. Both sides accuse each other of breaches, and in recent days violence has flared.
The Azeri defense ministry on Wednesday said Armenia had grossly violated the ceasefire by committing an act of sabotage that killed one soldier.
In addition, Baku said its forces had beaten back an Armenian attempt to capture a hill in an area controlled by the Russian peacekeepers. It demanded the disarmament of “illegal Armenian formations” around the disputed territory and also said it has taken control of several strategic heights in the region.
Aliyev and Pashinyan announce the creation of a border commission after their trilateral talks in Brussels:
A potential step toward resolving the 30-year-old conflict over the ethnic Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh is the establishment of a border commission by Armenia and Azerbaijan. The border delimitation commission will be headed by Vice-Premier Shahin Mustafayev, according to a decree that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev released on his website on Monday. According to the Telegram channel of the Russian Sputnik news agency, Mher Grigoryan, the deputy prime minister of Armenia, will serve as the chairman of the panel on border security and delimitation.

Despite a wave of protests in the Armenian capital of Yerevan that were sparked by opposition charges that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is giving too much away, the leaders of both nations agreed in Brussels on Sunday to cooperate on a peace plan. In 2020, a long-simmering conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, a mountainous region in Azerbaijan that ethnic Armenians supported by Yerevan have controlled since the 1990s, erupted into a six-week war in which Azerbaijani forces gained some of the lost territories.
The future peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia:
Since he stated that the international community wants Armenia to “lower the threshold” on ethnic Armenian claims to Nagorno-Karabakh, Pashinyan has seen a number of rallies in Yerevan in recent weeks.
On Sunday, Michel announced that by July or August, he will host another trilateral meeting with Aliyev and Pashinyan. The opening of the Zangezur corridor, which would have given Azerbaijan access to its Nakhchivan exclave, was something that Aliyev and Pashinyan agreed upon, according to Turkey’s Anadolu news agency. In order to connect Turkey and Russia through Azerbaijan, Aliyev plans to build highways and rail links across the region.
Azerbaijan is taking control of the territories one after the other since the second Karabakh War between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Amid Russia Ukraine War it is also difficult for Russian Peacekeepers to stay in Karabakh for a longer run.
