On the 19th of April, bombings targeting educational institutions in Afghanistan’s capital killed at least six people and injured 17 more. The explosions took place inside the Abdul Rahim Shaheed High School and a few kilometers away near the Mumtaz Education Center, both in the Shiite Muslim district of Dasht-e-Barchi.

Witnesses claimed it looked like a suicide bomber detonated a bomb inside the huge campus, which can house up to 1,000 pupils. No one has claimed responsibility for the explosion, but this terrible act appears to have been carried out by IS-K, which has previously attacked schools.

IS has posed the greatest security threat to Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers, who rushed into Kabul last August as the US finished its 20-year conflict with the country.

According to local officials and journalists, dozens of people were killed or injured in four blasts across Afghanistan on Thursday. In Mazar-i-Sharif, the first explosion ripped through a Shia Muslim mosque. According to the BBC, at least 31 causalities took place and 87 more were injured. The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Although the Taliban claim to have conquered the Islamic State, the group continues to pose a severe security threat to Afghanistan’s new leadership. IS has also claimed responsibility for another of Thursday’s strikes, in which a truck exploded outside a police station in Kunduz, killing four people and injuring 18.

A Taliban vehicle was also hit by a roadside mine in eastern Nangarhar province, killing four Taliban members and wounding a fifth, according to the BBC. Afghanistan’s capital produced a fourth detonation that injured two children. The country was thrown into chaos as a result of these explosions.
