Russia-Ukraine War Update: Key Fighting and Human Impact on Day 1,423
Russian Strikes and Ground Movements
Russian forces hit the city of Nikopol in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Two women died and six people were injured. Fighting stayed heavy in several parts of the country.
Russia said its troops took control of five settlements in the Zaporizhia region, including Zakotnoye and Zhovtnevoye. Ukraine has not confirmed these gains.
Energy Sites Under Repeated Attack
Russia’s Defence Ministry admitted carrying out seven attacks on Ukrainian energy and military sites in the past week. Power stations and heating systems were damaged again during freezing weather.
Children and older people are at high risk of hypothermia as power cuts continue. Many towns and villages are struggling to stay warm.

Ukraine Responds With Drone Strikes
Ukraine carried out its own attacks. A drone strike in Russian controlled Kherson killed a man. Ukrainian strikes also cut electricity to tens of thousands of homes in occupied Zaporizhia, according to Russian-appointed officials.
Ceasefire for Nuclear Plant Repairs
A short local ceasefire was agreed around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant to repair a damaged backup power line. Work should begin soon, according to the UN nuclear agency.
Heating Problems Across Kyiv
Kyiv is still dealing with major heating failures. Sixty seven apartment buildings remain without heat. Seventeen electrical substations are now running on generators. More than 1,300 warming tents have been set up across the city.

UK Announces New Energy Support
The UK announced a support package worth 20 million pounds to help Ukraine fix damaged energy systems. Zelenskyy thanked the British government and said repair crews are working day and night.
