According to a recent report by the Saudi Press Agency, the Ras Hatiba and Blue Holes marine areas have been added to the Kingdom’s national list of reserves by the Council of Ministers.

According to the SPA, the action demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s dedication to promoting sustainable development goals under Vision 2030 and safeguarding biodiversity.

The decision, according to Mohammed Qurban, CEO of the National Centre for Wildlife, came after a number of biological, ecological, and social studies that confirmed the two reserves’ distinctive biodiversity as well as its economic and tourism worth.

Ras Hatiba, a 5,715 square kilometre area northwest of Jeddah, is home to coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds, which are important habitats for sharks, whales, dolphins, green turtles, and dugongs.

Turtles, fish, animals, and invertebrates are among the abundant marine life found in the Blue Holes regions. Following the finding of 20 similar structures along the southern Red Sea coast, their discovery was first made public in 2022.

The Kingdom’s natural reserves currently make up 16.1% of its land, up from 6.5%, and are getting closer to the national target of 30% by 2030 with the addition of these two protected areas.
