Gavin Newsom weighs 2028 presidential run against Trump
US: Trump opponent Newsom is thinking about running for president in 2028. Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, has been a vocal opponent of Donald Trump, arguing with him about redistricting, immigration policies, and National Guard deployments.
Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, stated that he is thinking about running for president of the United States in 2028 and will decide after the 2026 midterm elections.
Newsom stated in a CBS interview that he would “be lying otherwise” if he denied thinking about running for president.

“I’m interested to see who steps up and who gets to meet that moment in 2028. In the interview that was shown on Sunday, he stated, “And that’s the question for the American people.”
Trump versus Newsom Newsom has been California’s governor since 2019 and served as San Francisco’s mayor from 2004 to 2011.
One of the most vocal opponents of US President Donald Trump, the Democrat particularly infuriated the Republican leader by mocking his all-caps posts and frequent usage of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated pictures on social media.

Redistricting initiatives, National Guard deployments, and immigration policies have also been points of contention between Newsom and Trump.
In an effort to counteract Republican-led redistricting in other states, the governor of California is leading the state’s effort to redraw congressional lines.

Trump is “an invasive species,” according to 58-year-old Newsom, who also claims that “he’s wrecking alliances, truth, trust, tradition, institutions.”
Even though Trump is prohibited from running for a third term by the US Constitution, he made a suggestion earlier this year that “there are methods which you could do it.”
