Abu Dhabi tests autonomous delivery vehicles in Masdar City pilot
The effort includes the issuance of the first official license plate for a self-driving delivery van by the emirate.
Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi’s first autonomous delivery vehicle pilot program has begun, according to the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), a division of the Department of Municipalities and Transport.
Under the direction of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC), the project is being implemented in collaboration with “K2” and EMX, 7X’s logistics division.
The effort includes the issuance of the first official license plate for a self-driving delivery van by the emirate.
A milestone in smart logistics The K2 subsidiary Autogo created the “Auto-Delivery” cars, which are intended to offer a cutting-edge solution for autonomous logistics.
With AI-powered systems and intelligent mobility, they can fulfil orders and navigate metropolitan streets without the need for human assistance.
An important first step towards a commercial deployment throughout Abu Dhabi is their experimental operation in Masdar City.
The program supports the emirate’s strategic strategy for smart transportation and reflects ITC’s role in regulating freight and autonomous cars.
Building on previous milestones like the launch of driverless taxis, Abu Dhabi wants to guarantee that 25% of all trips are made using smart transport solutions by 2040.
Encouragement of innovation and sustainability It is anticipated that integrating autonomous delivery trucks within Abu Dhabi’s legal framework will improve customer experiences, reduce carbon emissions, alleviate traffic, and promote smart logistics.
The unveiling was characterised as “a pivotal milestone in Abu Dhabi’s journey towards building a smart, sustainable transport system” by Dr. Abdulla Hamad Al Ghfeli, Acting Director General of ITC.
“This project is part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen smart logistics, reduce emissions and congestion, and improve quality of life in our cities,” he continued, adding that it was more than just a technological trial.
Industry collaboration The pilot is “a strategic milestone towards next-generation smart logistics,” according to 7X Group CEO Tariq Al Wahedi.
He went on to say: “We are dedicated to creating a faster, safer, more flexible, and sustainable logistics model through EMX, our logistics arm, in line with the UAE’s objectives for digital transformation and the green economy.”
Plans for expansion Autogo intends to expand its operations outside of Masdar City by collaborating with additional partners and entering more public spaces in the wake of this regulatory achievement. In the upcoming months, a full-scale commercial deployment is anticipated.
