Mark Carney is sworn in as Canada’s new Prime Minister

Mark Carney, a former central banker, was sworn in as Canada’s next prime minister on Friday.

He will now attempt to guide his nation through an anticipated federal election, annexation threats, and a trade war brought on by the US President Donald Trump.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who resigned in January but stayed in office until the Liberal Party chose a new leader, is replaced by 59.

It is generally anticipated that Carney will call a general election in the days or weeks ahead.

Prior to Trump’s declaration of economic war and his frequent claims that Canada should become the 51st state, the ruling Liberal Party seemed to be on the verge of a historic election defeat this year.

The party and its new leader have a chance to win now. Carney has stated that if Trump demonstrates “respect for Canadian sovereignty” and is prepared to adopt “a common approach, a much more comprehensive approach for trade,” he is prepared to meet with him.

Carney, a longtime executive at Goldman Sachs with no political background, is appointed as Canada’s 24th prime minister.

On April 2, Trump threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on all Canadian goods after imposing 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.

In his threats of annexation, he has implied that the boundary is a fictitious one and threatened economic pressure.
